Course Description:

Media Studies 20 is concerned with helping students develop an informed and critical understanding of the nature of the mass media, the messages contained in the mass media, the techniques used by them, and the impact of these media.

The following principles form a foundation for teaching Media Studies 20.

Language learning thrives when students are engaged in meaningful use of language. In this course, students should be given many opportunities to experiment and explore the various media and the issues associated with them. They should be encouraged to become involved in analysis, inquiry, and "hands on" activities related to the media.

This course places language and the mass media in the context of communication. Throughout each module, students should be encouraged to apply the "5W+H" questioning process to each communication context.

Who is communicating?

What is being communicated?

To whom is it communicated?

What medium is used?

What is the purpose of the communication? To inform and instruct? To persuade? To entertain?

How effective is the communication?

Media literacy involves understanding mass media and how they affect us. Students should explore the values and tastes that are relevant to their own community and the impact of the mass media on their community.

A balanced view of each medium is important. The positive features of the mass media as well as the negative features should be examined.

In addition, five key concepts underlie the Media Studies 20 course.

The mass media use carefully crafted messages that present a particular sense of what the world is and how it works. While all of us have our own view of the way the world is "constructed" based on our experiences, many of our notions are influenced by what the mass media show us.

Each medium has its own forms and conventions. Language, design, sound, lighting, camera angles, etc. are used to construct meaning in a particular way.

Each media message has its own ideology and biases. Recognizing values and biases is part of being media literate.

Media messages often have commercial implications. Most media production is undertaken as a business with a goal of making a profit. This can influence what is presented in the mass media.

The mass media are responded to and interpreted in different ways. No individual or group is entirely alike any other. Each audience will react to and interpret media messages in a different way. The informed viewer, listener, and reader analyzes the media message and tries to understand and appreciate how and why a particular interpretation is made.

Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 10 is to be allocated 100 hours. It is important for students to receive the full amount of time allocated to their mathematical learning and that the learning be focused upon students attaining the understanding and skills as defined by the outcomes and indicators stated in this curriculum.

The outcomes in the Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 10 course are based upon the students' prior learning and continue to develop their number sense, spatial sense, logical thinking, and understanding of mathematics as a human endeavour. These learning experiences prepare students to be confident, flexible, and capable with their mathematical knowledge in new contexts. The outcomes in this course are the prerequisite outcomes for the Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 20 course.

The outcomes in this curriculum define content that is considered a high priority in fields of study and areas of work for which the Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics pathway is appropriate. The outcomes represent the ways of thinking or behaving like a mathematics discipline area expert in those fields of study or areas of work. The mathematical knowledge and skills acquired through this course will be useful to students in many applications throughout their lives in both work and non-work settings.

Course Description:

The
goal of this course is to help students understand that humans establish
various kinds of organizations as a means of systematically meeting their needs
and wants. These organizations may be political or economic. Additionally, this
course is about a lot of "isms", (conservatism, liberalism, socialism, imperialism)
or philosophical viewpoints that underlie how people think about society in
unique ways.

The
ideas of this course are far-reaching, and while complex at times, certainly
the basis for understanding almost everything about the makeup and the conflicts
of our world.

There
are five core concepts which figure prominently in Grade 10 History.

Interdependence: The
concept of interdependence underlies the study of social organizations.

Social Institution:
Students will explore the organizations which have been established to
organize our social or common lives.

Decision-Making:
Students will study how political and economic decisions are made at the
     national and international levels.

Power: Students
will further develop their understanding of this concept by exploring
     political and economic decision-making.

Ideology: Students
will examine the role ideology plays in the economic and political
     decision-making processes of social organizations.

The
concepts of this course can be quite challenging, but for those who read
broadly before undertaking to answer questions in the assignments, the rewards
of studying this course and the 18th, 19th and 20th
century events that are used to illustrate the unit concepts, can be
substantial and thought-provoking.

Due
to the demanding nature of this course, it is recommended for students who have
excellent independent study and research skills.

Note:
The following textbook will be required for this course: "Globe Fearon World
History" published by Pearson Group. It can be purchased by phoning "1-800-387-8028".
